Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews approached the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the scene and another man who escaped subsequent to the blast was located shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area revealed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the residence was subject to an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander the police commander told the media.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the detonation had occurred on a story above the entrance and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to Italian media, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
