Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
Summers remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and anticipate tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once headed Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed emails revealed that the economist corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it accepted Summers' decision to resign.
"We value his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the company commented.
Legislative Background
This news comes after the two houses of the US legislature decided on this week to endorse a bill that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on the case.
The measure will then move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has said he expects to endorse the bill, after reversing his position on the matter following pushback from his base.
