Joseph Parker Could Receive Potential Disqualification Following Failed Drugs Test

Joseph Parker tested positive during a drugs test carried out the same day he faced 11th-round stoppage versus English fighter Fabio Wardley.

The Bout and Its Consequences

Wardley and Parker participated in an intense contest staged in the UK capital on 25 October to establish the next WBO mandatory challenger to reigning heavyweight king Ukrainian champion Usyk.

Parker had been the leading contender to meet Usyk following putting together a remarkable six wins in a row, but risked his shot at the title at stake during the bout and endured a stoppage in round eleven.

Positive Test Along with Possible Outcomes

A routine test administered to Parker by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency the day he fought returned positive which leaves the veteran boxer facing a challenge to demonstrate his cleanliness.

His promotion team published a statement stating: "The anti-doping body notified all relevant parties about Parker had a positive result after a drug screening carried out on the fight day. While the matter is investigated, no more comments will be made at this time."

Boxing Journey

The New Zealand boxer earned the title of world champion six years ago prior to he lost his championship belt through a points decision to Anthony Joshua at the Millennium Stadium in 2018.

Parker remained a frequent visitor on British soil after that, having eight matches overall in the UK and transferring to the Irish capital for fight camps with highly regarded trainer Andy Lee over the past few years.

Recent Developments

Under the tutelage of Lee, Parker overcame his 2022 loss against Joe Joyce to secure a string of victories positioning him at the front of the line to challenge Usyk before he suffered defeat against Wardley.

After the boxer produced a failed test during the Wardley bout, allegedly for cocaine, a probe into the findings has been started.

  • Joseph Parker returned an adverse finding for an illegal substance.
  • The test took place via the anti-doping agency on the fight day.
  • Joseph Parker could receive a possible suspension from competition.
  • His promotional team has issued a comment acknowledging the adverse finding.
