Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Secure Nostalgic Win Against Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” was chanted through the ground as Forest followers celebrated another success against Malmö. A great deal has happened since Trevor Francis’s winning header secured the European Cup back in the year 1979, but the club continue to hold dear those glorious moments. Equally, major shifts have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team looking reinvigorated and securing a convincing win thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of advancing in the European competition.

Building Steam with Third Straight Win

For Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for nearly a month after finishing sixth in their domestic league – marked a third consecutive win across every tournament and further built on the momentum generated from the previous week's stunning victory at Liverpool. While this match was a re-run of Forest’s historic success in name, the encounter itself was free of any real tension or jitters.

It proved to be an occasion filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third clash between the sides since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

Forest leaned into the history, honoring the heroes of that era by giving them, along with their visiting counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s squad from that time were additionally present. Both teams shared a dinner together before the match. Forest legends and company received a rousing welcome when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a characteristically impressive tifo was unveiled in the Trent End.

Recalling History

“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” displayed one part of a large tifo, in capital letters. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the remaining section was unfurled as the squads came out from the dressing rooms. “There is Francis,” it continued. Another stunning tifo depicted Brian Clough watching proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Start

So, Forest had soaked up those wonderful memories, but what about the performance on the evening? It was impressive, too. They were in full command from the moment the forward fired an attempt wide inside two minutes and established a two-goal lead by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.

It felt fitting that Yates, who came to Forest as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defense led by their own homegrown captain, Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford FC. The Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a defender and into the path of the midfielder, who finished with his right foot from just inside the box to score his maiden strike since March.

Another Strike Seals Control

Yates was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the brink of the interval, as well, his unmarked header parried by Malmö’s shot-stopper Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to convert the loose ball from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a seldom start and just his second appearance since the autumn, was the spark, lofting a perfect ball towards Yates at the far post.

Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi driven shot was turned wide off the back Colin Rösler, son of ex- Manchester City forward Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic also previously had a strong header smartly saved by Ellborg, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalie Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was the Swedish side's initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan concluded on November 9th, and they found it hard to match Forest’s energy. Forest extended the lead to three when Milenkovic scored after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a corner. Yates had a shot blocked, but the Serbia defender Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.

Forest then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a effort on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from distance. It was that kind of nights. The manager, mindful of the upcoming league game here against Brighton, implemented seven changes from the team that surprised the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced substitutes and further fresh legs midway through the final period.

Hiccup-Free Night for the Team

It turned out to be a flawless night for Forest. Dyche could withdraw the defender with the game long since boxed off and subsequently brought on teenage defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard providing “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the current crop demonstrated they are able of producing of excitement, too.
