At least 64 civilians died in a police operation cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's history.

Four security agents lost their lives during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. In excess of 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Mission Consequences

The slum neighborhoods near Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of a major organised crime groups.

State officials stated at least 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Residents have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The Red Command group has been growing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, in addition to numerous weapons.

Mission Context

The combined action by civil and military police follows a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be members of a faction from the northern region who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.

Extensive security missions are not uncommon in the country ahead of significant global gatherings in the nation.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is scheduled in the northern city of Belem in November.
